My State Has Constitutional Carry... Do I Still Need a Permit?
Yes! While constitutional carry (aka permitless carry) has been adopted by many states, it comes with tremendous legal risks that most firearm carriers are not aware of. Here are three important reasons to get your concealed carry permit, even if you live in a constitutional-carry state:
1. The Federal Gun-Free School Zones Act (GFSZA)
It is a federal felony to possess a firearm within 1,000 feet of K-12 schools. This crime carries a fine of up to $5,000 and up to five years in prison. To be exempt from the GFSZA, a person must keep a firearm unloaded and locked within a hard-sided case or have the permit issued by the state in which the school is located.
2. Reciprocity with Other States
At some point, you may wish to visit a state that does not allow constitutional carry and, therefore, requires a permit to carry a concealed firearm. Many of these states recognize permits from other states, so having yours may expand your concealed carry options.
3. Waived Background Check Fees
Some states will waive the fee for the federally-required background check for firearm purchases.
